Back 5 years ago, I decided to get back into field trials, shorthairs and upland hunting, now that I’d past 65 and was retiring, kind of!
In doing some research, trying to find a pup from Hall of Fame German Shorthaired pointers , Rawhides Clown or Crosswinds Truckin Fritz!
Somehow while searching for such a specimen, I was put into contact I was told, might be able to help me! His name was Larry Mize, a former NSTRA field trial judge, who had a stud dog named Beam Me Up Scotty, grandson of Truckin Fritz!
During our conversation, he told me of a female he had been using for a guide dog on Old Hickory Plantation in Kentucky that he was letting go of because she hunted to ‘close in’ for field trials! She had been the female pick of her 10 puppy litter, and Larry had donated her too his Quail Unlimited chapter and she was auctioned off for more than 2500! (he never told me how much exactly) Long story short the guy ended up divorced almost a year later, and ask Larry if he’d take her back and someday pay him what he could!
Her name was Annie, and she was the daughter of Scotty, and the granddaughter of another well known NSTRA Hall of Fame dog, Crosswinds Microchip! Chip was the son of the incredible Crosswinds Truckin Fritz, sire to 93 progeny that had earned Champsionship status by winning many field trials and hunting competitions.
Annie had turned 3 that February, 2020. Larry had been using her as a guide dog at a quail hunting place in Kentucky called ‘Old Hickory’ Plantation, a pay to hunt place. She had a great nose, needed no e collar to ‘force’ her to comply, as Annie is very biddable and pleasant to hunt with. She does hunt close, but her offspring didn’t inherit that in their traits, and have been taught as far or as near as you train them too based on your needs in a pointing or field trial dog!
I, being always suspicious, it’s my nature, sadly, decided to send her to a trainer aquaintance outside of Aurora Missouri and have him ‘see’ if she was well trained and a good hunter. After a short week, he called and said you can come get her, as he didn’t need to ‘train her’ as she would smell and get birdey as soon as he’d let her out of her kennel, approximately 100 yards from the grass training field where he’d plant his pigeons or quail. He began to recount what he said was a good a hunting dog as he’d seen!

Hi fellow dog lover!🐶 My dog Billie had so many behavior problems… she was jumping, peeing inappropriately, overly aggressive, pulling on the leash… she was just crazy…🤪 Then I found this one solution that stopped all the problems!🙌 The sad fact was…The training I first tried with my dog was a complete fai…lure.😔 I went through the average cookie-cutter training programs. These programs used outdated and ‘mean’ dominance techniques. It turns out those programs had no qualifications and were developed by complete phonies.😱 So this is what I did to stop my dog’s behavior problems… In a few simple words… I discovered my dog’s hidden intelligence!🧠
Let me explain… In my years as a dog owner…this is the one big lesson I have learned. More intelligent dogs are better behaved.👍 A more intelligent dog takes commands easier…and understands what you need from them. What I found out was… No matter how clever I thought my dog was. I could still unlock my dog’s hidden intelligence quickly and easily!😄 Don’t waste a second longer putting up with your dog’s behavior problem! I’ll explain everything you need to know in the link!😁

In this video, we are counting down the top 10 facts about the German Shorthaired Pointer that you might not know.
A Quick Overview:
Group: Sporting Dogs
Weight: 45 to 70 pounds
Height: 1 foot, 9 inches to 2 feet, 1 inch tall at the shoulder
Life Expectancy: 12 to 15 years
One of the most versatile sporting breeds around, the stylish and regal German Shorthaired Pointer (GSP for short) is a superb hunting dog who also excels as a family companion. He hunts feathered and furred game and will even trail deer. In the evening, he plays with the kids or curls up next to you on the sofa. Not a hunter? The German Shorthair will be happy to hike or jog with you.
Slightly smaller than a Pointer, the GSP has an elegantly chiseled head with dark almond-shaped eyes, an intelligent, good-humored expression, and a large, dark nose. Broad, dropped ears are set high and lie flat against the head. But the most striking aspect of the GSP’s appearance is his short, dense, sleek coat of solid liver or liver and white, which can be patched, ticked or roan. The tail is usually docked, leaving about 40 percent of the original length.
This energetic, intelligent dog is enthusiastic at work and play. He likes being with people and is a good friend to children, albeit a bit rambunctious for little ones. That people-loving personality causes the GSP to be unhappy if left alone for long periods, and he can become nervous and destructive if he’s not provided with regular companionship and exercise. He’ll bark at strangers but isn’t aggressive. Males tend to be more outgoing and are more aggressive hunters than females.

Ted came to Royvon to work on his obedience and focus, as well as to carry on with his crate training. Despite his strength and size, Ted was a young puppy who was very energetic and excitable who was easily distracted. Charlie needed to demonstrate that calm and positive behaviour would be rewarded, and used treats to encourage and reward obedience. By the end of his training Ted saw his crate as a calm and safe space, and he was much more responsive to commands.
