While there are plenty of crossovers, when it comes to bird hunting, dog breeds tend to fall into one of two main categories: Upland bird dogs are engaged in hunting birds such as bobwhite and roosters that live in and around the tall grasses and shrubs that grow in fields and forests, while wetland bird dogs help hunters find water birds, such as ducks, geese, and waterfowl. The roles carried out by the dogs involved in these types of hunting vary significantly, and a breed of dog that is an excellent bobwhite hunter will not necessarily be a good choice for wetland hunting and vice versa. Whoa Training Bird Dog Puppies First Step – Teach Stand



You may be wondering what can I teach my dog other than sit? Sit is a pretty easy behavior to teach your dog or puppy, but we don’t want sit to become the default for everything, especially if we have a bird dog! In this video we show how to teach a puppy they can be rewarded for other behaviors, like the “whoa” behavior. To teach your puppy the whoa behavior you first need to reward them for standing and not sitting. Once you puppy is consistently standing to earn a reward then we can introduce the cue “whoa”. So if you are asking yourself, “what can I teach my dog other than sit?” The answer is you can teach your dog to whoa!

A Celebration of Bird Dogs | Oklahoma Quail Hunting

I’ve seen, and participated in, numerous discussions on various platforms about which hunting breed is the “best”. These mostly devolve into ugly name calling which serves as proof that dogs of all breeds are better than us humans. I have my own favorite breed but I don’t allow that to keep me from enjoying as many of the other breeds as possible. I offer this collection simply as a celebration of the dogs I’ve been lucky enough to hunt behind in the last five years. It is not exhaustive as I didn’t capture good video or photos of every wonderful dog. I’ve hunted behind so many… pointers, setters, brittanies, pointers, vizslas, weimaraners, American water spaniels, cockers, pudelpointers and labrador retrievers are the ones I can remember. Some are still hunting others have passed. I hope you enjoy the ones I was able to include.
