Terry Chandler, a master hunter and president of the National German Shorthaired Pointer Club, talks about the breed he loves. Dogumentary TV caught up with Terry at a Field Test in California City, California.
The German Shorthaired Pointer (GSP) is a medium to large sized breed of dog developed in the 19th century in Germany for hunting. A versatile hunting breed, being an all-purpose gun breed of dog suitable for both land and water, it is streamlined yet powerful with strong legs that make it able to move rapidly and turn quickly. It has moderately long floppy ears set high on the head. Its muzzle is long, broad, and strong, allowing it to retrieve even heavy game. The dog’s profile should be straight or strongly Roman nosed; any dished appearance to the profile is incorrect. The eyes are generally brown, with darker eyes being desirable; yellow or “bird of prey” eyes are a fault. The tail is commonly docked, although this is now prohibited in some countries[3]. The correct location for docking for a GSP is after the caudal vertebrae start to curl, leaving enough tail to let the dog communicate through tail wagging and movement.[citation needed] The docked tail should not be too long or too short but should balance the appearance of the head and body. The GSP tail is carried at a jaunty angle, not curled under. When the GSP is in classic point stance, the tail should be held straight out from the body, forming a line with the pointing head and body. Like all German pointers, GSPs have webbed feet. They are known for going after water fowl in the water. The German Shorthaired Pointer is a member of the Sporting Group.

A Deutsch Kurzhaar Story – Bird Dog Trainer for a Day – Upland Project
We all have our bird dog breeds, and for gun dog trainer and breeder David Trahan, that breed is the Deutsch Kurzhaar. David Trahan is a New Hampshire native and owner of On-Point Kennels in Deerfield. He has harnessed his passion for pointers by becoming a professional hunting dog trainer and eventually a Deutsch Kurhzaar breeder. These German Shorthaired Dogs from the German System are subject to testing and standards to maintain the rigorous requirements as a breeder. Deutsch Kurhzaar Fact: The German Shorthaired Pointer (originally Deutsch Kurzhaar) was developed in the mid-19th century. During that time, the concept of the “versatile” hunting dog became a priority in Western Europe as a practical alternative to the more aristocratic preference. The wealthiest hunters would own several breeds, one for each hunting task. But the versatile dogs had to do it all: find and point out mountain animals, retrieve waterfowl, track fur and feathers, and work consistently in varied terrain and weather conditions. This short film takes us on a journey from the breed to field training and ultimately what it is like to be a bird dog trainer. Although it is a demanding lifestyle, being a bird dog trainer is a rewarding experience. This Deutsch Kurhzaar film was presented by Dogtra: The Worlds Finest E-collars. For more information on hunting dog training or for the latest articles, advice and videos. In this video, we are counting down the top 10 facts about the German Shorthaired Pointer that you might not know.
A Quick Overview:
Group: Sporting Dogs
Weight: 45 to 70 pounds
Height: 1 foot, 9 inches to 2 feet, 1 inch tall at the shoulder
Life Expectancy: 12 to 15 years
One of the most versatile sporting breeds around, the stylish and regal German Shorthaired Pointer (GSP for short) is a superb hunting dog who also excels as a family companion. He hunts feathered and furred game and will even trail deer. In the evening, he plays with the kids or curls up next to you on the sofa. Not a hunter? The German Shorthair will be happy to hike or jog with you.
Slightly smaller than a Pointer, the GSP has an elegantly chiseled head with dark almond-shaped eyes, an intelligent, good-humored expression, and a large, dark nose. Broad, dropped ears are set high and lie flat against the head. But the most striking aspect of the GSP’s appearance is his short, dense, sleek coat of solid liver or liver and white, which can be patched, ticked or roan. The tail is usually docked, leaving about 40 percent of the original length.
This energetic, intelligent dog is enthusiastic at work and play. He likes being with people and is a good friend to children, albeit a bit rambunctious for little ones. That people-loving personality causes the GSP to be unhappy if left alone for long periods, and he can become nervous and destructive if he’s not provided with regular companionship and exercise. He’ll bark at strangers but isn’t aggressive. Males tend to be more outgoing and are more aggressive hunters than females.

First Season of Bird Hunting with a Dog: A Story About the Wirehaired Pointing Griffon
The first bird season with a dog is full of good and bad, but it’s all part of an incredible journey. This is the creative director of Project Upland, AJ DeRosa’s first season with his wire-haired sample griffon. A rollercoaster of failures and victories that highlights our love for bird dogs. “These autumn days belong to him now. I can no longer call these cuts my own. The joy found in the silence of a bell and the lifting of wings in a deafening forest is like the song of a siren. And when I realize How short they are, their lives become even more imminent. Time will reveal the unfair treatment between me and my best friend, but although I fear that on that day, you will never be able to exchange the now. Our memories together will live on, we will always have our first. season. “.
