Teaching your puppy to stop biting requires consistency and hard work. Save your fingers from future pain by training your dog at a young age that biting and chewing is bad behavior.

Step 1: Play with your puppy, bringing attention to your hands
Sit on the floor with your puppy and play. Bring their attention to your hands by tapping the floor in front of them and wiggling your fingers.

Don’t scare your dog by tapping their face. Teasing might cause them to instinctively bite out of self-defense.

Step 2: Yell “Ow!” and stop playing when puppy bites
Loudly and sharply yell “Ow!” when your puppy bites you too hard. Quickly pull your hands away and immediately stop playing.

Step 3: Play again and see if they continue to bite
Play with your puppy again after a few minutes have passed. Again, draw attention to your hands, and see if they bite.

Step 4: Offer a reward if they don’t bite
Offer a treat or other reward if your puppy doesn’t bite your hand, and continue playing with them.

Step 5: Yell “Ow!” again; ignore for 20 seconds if they bite
Yell “Ow!” again if they bite you. Then turn away and ignore the dog or put them in a designated time-out spot. Wait 20 to 30 seconds before turning to them and trying again.

Choose a “time-out” spot for your dog, like a small room away from people, toys, and other animals; use this spot as a means of punishment. Never hit your dog to punish them.

Step 6: Be consistent
Be consistent in your training, practicing in short, 15-minute bursts of time as often as you can. Your dog will quickly learn that biting is a quick way to bring an end to the fun.

Did You Know?
Like humans, dogs have two sets of teeth — baby teeth and adult teeth. Around four months old, a puppy’s baby teeth start to fall out and their adult teeth grow in.

How to train Puppy to walk on a leash-puppies that stop and are scared or stubborn

This is Zoe learning to walk on a harness. She is unsure at first and stops suddenly quite a bit. We use a combination of practicing an authoritative energy with lots of treat re-enforcement. It’s important to note that sometimes light leash pressure can be a great tool to build confidence in your dog and teach them how to give in to the leash pressure rather then pull away. It can even help with extremely fearful cases by using pressure, and then releasing as soon as the dog makes that decision to give in. However, when working with a nervous dog outside, that is not the best approach. It is better to stick to any leash pressure exercises (like crating or come or even heeling in the house) in the house where they are more comfortable, no outside influences, and where you can really teach them to give in to it where-as outside they are nervous already.

Here is Zoe’s video on Thresholds when someone comes over.

How to use SNOOP TOY can STOP Dog destructive Chewing behavior

More on how to stop puppy chewing everything:

Previously we introduced Kong Toy. I think it’s a very good toy as a solution to chewing problems. Today I found something else I can use to rotate my toys. Start your destructive Puppy Behavior Prevention with this Orbee-tuff treat snoop dispenser, a fun toy to keep your dog occupied. Puppies need to chew. Chewing allows them to ease teething pain, and it alleviates boredom.
Dogs look for things to do if they are bored or no proper energy outlet, they will start finding things on their own, like your shoes and furniture. To prevent your puppy from getting in the habit of inappropriate chewing, I found this toy very helpful. The first time I tired it was in the pet store where they let my dog tested it on the spot. I think this is a very good solution to many dog’s behavior problems inside the house.

STOP UNWANTED behaviors with BACK UP! – Dog Training

Dog training video on BACK UP – In this tutorial you will learn how to teach your dog to back up when you move into your dog’s space. This tutorial is not necessary for every dog but is great for dogs who seem to lack a sense of personal space, seem pushy or can easily become over aroused and want to climb up you. For example, when you are sitting on the couch, and your dog get’s too close to you or climbs on you or climbs up you. This tutorial is also an excellent exercise to teach your dog if they can become fearful or reactive towards dogs and people, as you will be conditioning the dog to have a positive emotional response to someone moving into their space.

It’s really important that if you have a dog who you are uncertain who will become overly reactive, fearful or aggressive when interacting with you that you do hire a professional trainer who doesn’t use intimidation to train to go through these steps first with your dog before they give you the OK to work with your dog alone. A trainer can help know when to lower or raise criteria as well as be able to read your dogs signals that they are feeling uncomfortable.

The video covers how to train your dog the behavior. Once you have done 10-12 short sessions of teaching this behavior, you can then start to use the cue in real life scenarios. When your dog is doing something you don’t like – like climbing on you, it’s important to not reinforce the dog with a treat after they listen to you to back up. Instead, redirect the dog to doing a behavior you DO want your dog to do. Like go to his bed or play with his toys on his own. Then at other points in the day, make a habit of reinforcing the behaviors you do want your dog to do. If you reinforce your dog with a treat right after they back up from jumping on you, you can inadvertently reinforce a chain of behaviors which includes the one you didn’t like. If your cue doesn’t work in real life scenarios it will need more conditioning by repetition in training sessions where the dog is calm and relaxed. Interrupting your dog’s undesirable behavior is just one piece of the training puzzle. Please review my previous video to learn more about this: When training a dog, the idea is is that STOPPING the behavior is not the biggest part of the solution as REPLACING it with the behavior you DO want your dog to do. Interrupting behavior is just a way to prevent those behaviors from attaining a reinforcement history. The sooner you interrupt and redirect dogs the less likely there will be a reinforcement history created for the undesirable behavior. So interrupting behavior is part of the training plan, but training and reinforcing the behaviors you like will play the biggest role in your behavior modification plan for your dog.

How to Stop Your Dog From Gulping Food

Does your dog eat every meal as if it were his or her last meal? Is the food gone before you’ve even put away the dog food bag? If so, there’s help for this unhealthy gulping. Food gulping can lead to vomiting, choking and possibly bloat in large or giant breed dogs.

In the past, it was recommended to put a large serving spoon in the bowl along with the food so the dog would have to eat around the spoon, therefore slowing down eating. Some even recommended placing a large rock in the bowl for the same effect but it’s not possible to sanitize a rock.

More recently, several manufacturers have produced bowls with raised partitions or humps that slow the dog down while eating. The dog has to eat around the raised portions to get the food, slowing down eating and swallowing. These bowls are good for all size dogs and puppies.

The Portion Pacer is another great idea to slow down your dog when he or she is eating. Based on the rock idea, these are available in two sizes and come in either stainless steel or ceramic. They can be sanitized in the dishwasher and are a great solution to an age-old problem.

Another way to slow your dog’s eating is not using a bowl at all. Instead of pouring the dog food into a bowl, take the portion of kibble you would normally feed and place it in a treat dispensing toy like a Buster Food Cube. The dog has to nose the toy around the floor and as it rolls, the pieces of food drop out. There are other treat dispensing toys you can also use that will slowly dispense the food one piece at a time. This provides the dog with mental stimulation as well as some physical exercise so it’s great for highly active or overweight dogs.

Food gulping is not a problem for all dogs but if your dog is a gulper, there are many products designed to slow his or her eating so your dog gets a healthy meal without the health risk.

Training a Fearful Dog is challenging. Not only you have to battle dog anxiety, fear, but also their ability to understand you and be able to relax.

A lot of dogs are afraid of being touched, whether it be their legs, behind, feet, or even their face. But it is possible to help them get through that fear – and even learn to like being touched! So how can we do that??

Well, in this video, Enrique from DogWorx in Savannah, Ga, shares one of his secret training methods that have allowed him to help countless of fearful dogs. The Dog in the video, Scout, had a history of biting at the moment you touched his collar; he even bit Enrique during training. But with the training we share, you can see how quickly Scout became more calm, more confident, and even more accepting of being touched.

Change the state of mind, change the behavior! DogWorx is Savannah Georgia’s premiere dog training service, which offers both board and train and in home dog training. We are experts in dog behavior modification, fixing dog aggression, human aggression, resource guarding, separation anxiety, fear issues, anxiety issues, leash aggression, leash reactivity, pulling on leash, jumping on people, counter surfing, stealing food, chewing and destruction, barking problems, running away, not listening, growling, snapping, biting, door bolting, cat aggression, cat killing, trash digging and more! In addition to these services, I am also low level, ecollar off leash specialist.

If you would like to have a dog that comes to you every time you call them, sits when you ask, downs anywhere, and will go to place when guests arrive instead of jumping on them, without a leash and at any distance, we have the answers you’re looking for.

How to Stop PUPPY Biting When Taking Treats – PUPPY Dog Training Video

How to stop your puppy from biting your hands when he takes treats is not hard to do, but many people make the situation worse by doing the wrong thing.

In this video I address the right way to handle the situation and condition your puppy to take treats with a soft mouth and not BITE your hand. This will also work with adult dogs.

We call this training Taking Treats with a Soft Mouth. Dogs that are mouthy are sometimes falsely labeled as aggressive, but they are not. Using bad technique to counter condition this can make it much worse. iv’e dealt with this countless times in working at animal shelters with rescue dogs as well as puppies from breeders. I think you’ll love this video.
