If you’re a novice or a golf pro, your ears perk up at the promise of a golf swing that produces a straighter shot.
Hours of golf instruction has been produced and applied concerning hitting the golf ball straight, but the adjustments needed to our swings do not translate universally to each golfer.
The slightest adjustments to our swing, posture, grip and position of the ball have massive influence over the flight path on any given shot.
Golf shots that veer straighter tend to do so because our golf club has taken a square path with the club face.
To achieve a square swing path we must make adjustments to our path in relation to the clubface until this condition has been met.
For example, if the swing path falls too far left, we will have to make the needed adjustments to bring it more towards our right.
Being able to develop a natural feeling for where the swing path and clubface are will require practice and hands on golf instruction or observation from a partner who can assist.
The fastest way to achieve straighter shots comes from being open to instruction and constructive criticism, which will help make the needed adjustments to our golf swing.
Straight golf shots are a product of variability in our practice rather than creating our standard golf shot and sticking to it.
After such practice, golfers are able to physically sense or feel the club moving more to the left or right, even in the slightest increments.
Modern golf instruction teaches us that one of the most important elements needed to hit the ball straight comes through the proper grip.
Our lead hand should have the thumb down and rest right of center, in what coaches refer to as a neutral grip.
The non-lead hand should be gripped upon the club in almost handshake fashion along the side of the grip. The space between our thumb and pointer finger should create a v shape, pointing towards the shoulder of our non-lead arm.
Hitting through the golf ball with the correctly adjusted alignment and grip will produce the desired straight shot and put you right on your intended target.
