What Would Jeff Do? Dog Training Tip of the Day #128
How quickly are you falling in love and why?
I get lots of emails/PM/inquires a day from folks struggling with their dogs, lots of them they just aquired and usually the dogs are doing some pretty bad behaviors. A typical letter is, our dog is attacking our kids and/or dogs or the person writing the letter, and they have owned the dog for a couple of weeks and they LOVE the dog and don’t want to surrender it.
I don’t want you to surrender the dog either, but how did you get to LOVE the dog so darn quick? How do yo even know if you love the dog? Why do you love the dog that is trying to harm you after owning the dog for such a short period of time, I am talking about this because it is clouding your judgement and will impact if you will be succesful with the training and rehab.
I am not saying you can not rehab a dog that you LOVE and you are not a bad person for loving your dog. What I always suggest to folks though is as soon as you get a dog, no matter how old or from where, you immediately put it into a highly structured training program, you set up your home with lots of structure, you set up the dogs life with lots of structure, you put together a lifestyle program that teaches the dog what you want and what you don’t want.
Date for a little bit before you fall in love with the dog, understand the dog that you have, don’t let your emotions cloud your decisions with the dog or else you can run into some trouble. This seems to be a constant theme I see, but the concept of giving a dog love and that will be all you need to have the dog make correct choices and not misbehave just is not going to happen.
