Leech Lake Area Largemouth Bass

Spread the love

>> A LOT OF TIMESWE’RE USING SPINNING GEAR,WE’RE USING MONOFILAMENT LINE. IT’S CLEAR WATER AND JUSTSO MUCH FUN, BECAUSE THESE FISH,THEY JUST BULLDOGGEDALL THE WAY TO THE BOAT. >> THERE WE GO. >> ALL RIGHT. >> THERE’S A BETTER ONE. >> YEAH, RIGHT. >> HERE SHE COMES. >> WHOA!THERE’S NO SECRETWHERE YOU’RE GONNA FINDTHESE LARGEMOUTH BASS. YOU JUST FISH THE WEEDS AND FISHTHAT AQUATIC VEGETATION. THERE’S NO SHORTAGE OF IT. THERE HE IS. >> YOU KNOW, YOU LOOKAT LEECH LAKE,IT’S BY FAR ONE OFTHE PREMIER WALLEYE FISHERIESIN THE STATE OF MINNESOTA. WE’VE DONE A LOTOF WALLEYE SHOWS IN THE PAST. HISTORICALLY, IT’S BEEN ONEOF THE TOP MUSKY FISHERIESIN THE STATE. WHAT ALSO MAKES THIS AREASO INCREDIBLE IN MY OPINIONIS NOT ONLY DO YOU HAVELEECH LAKE,BUT YOU’VE GOTALL THESE SMALL LAKESTHAT ARE IN THIS IMMEDIATE AREAAND A LOT OF THEM OFFERTREMENDOUS FISHING,PARTICULARLY FOR BASSAND FOR PANFISH. AND SO IF YOU GET THESE WINDYSITUATIONS WHERE THE WINDMIGHT BE A LITTLE BIT TOO ROUGHOUT ON LEECH LAKE,YOU CAN DUCK OUT AND HIDEIN THESE SMALL LAKES. SOMETIMES YOU GET SOMEFLAT CONDITIONS WHERE THERE’SNO WIND AND THE WALLEYE BITEIS OFF, GO TARGET SOME OF THESELARGEMOUTH BASS. THESE LARGEMOUTH BASSALWAYS SEEM TO WANT TO PLAY. THEY’RE ALWAYS IN A MOODTO FIGHT AND IT’S JUSTA TREMENDOUS AMOUNT OF FUN. AND MORE ANGLERS ARE DISCOVERINGTHIS IN MINNESOTA ALL THE TIME. WE’RE JOINED UP TODAYBY A GENTLEMANTHAT HAS CAUGHT MORETHAN HIS FAIR SHARE OF BASS. HOW YOU DOIN’, AL?GREAT TO SEE YOU. >> GOOD TO SEE YOU AGAIN, JASE. >> I KNOW BASS FISHINGIS SOMETHING YOU ENJOY A LOT. >> OH YEAH,IT’S A CHALLENGE ALL THE TIME. YOU KNOW, AND WE HAVEQUALITY BASS. AS YOU MENTIONED,WE GOT A LOT OF LAKESBESIDES LEECH LAKEWHERE THEY’RE IN. BUT LEECH REALLY HASA GOOD POPULATION OF BIG FISH. >> THERE WE GO. >> OKAY. HOW’S HE FEEL?>> WHOA! THAT ONEWAS FURTHER IN, WASN’T IT?>> YEAH, HE WAS ATTHE EDGE THERE. >> AND JUMP. >> THERE. >> YOU HAVE TO BE ABLE TO FISHDEEP WEEDLINES IN SOME LAKES,BUT MOST OF THE TIMEIN LEECH LAKE, THEY’RE INTHE BACK BAYS OR SHALLOW. AND SO YOU’RE THROWING SPOONSINTO REAL HEAVY COVER,WEEDLESS SPOONS OR SOMETHINGTHAT AT LEAST CAN GO THROUGH IT,FROGS, TOADS, OVER THE TOP. THAT WORKS GOOD. AND THEN THEY USUALLYFOLLOW IT UP WITH A PIG ON A JIGOR PIG IN A CRITTER OR SOMETHINGWHEN THEY BLOW OUT. SO YEAH, WE’VE CHANGEDA LOT OF TECHNIQUES. >> OH!THERE HE IS. >> THAT LOOKS GOOD. >> HE’S GOING BELOW THE BOAT. >> OH YEAH. WHOA!>> GOOD. >> ALL RIGHT. YEAH, THESE ARE THICK,THICK FISH. >> THAT’S GOOD. GETTING THERE, JASE. WE’RE GETTING THERE. >> SO OFTEN, WHEN WE’RETARGETING LARGEMOUTH BASS,IT’S ALL ABOUT SHADOWS,IN THAT WHEN THAT SUN IS LOWEARLY IN THE DAY,THESE FISH ARE GONNA BEPOSITIONED OFF THE COVERAND THEY’RE GONNA BE ROAMINGMORE AND THEY’LL POSITIONTHEMSELVES AWAY FROMTHE STRUCTURE,AWAY FROM THE COVER. BUT AS THAT SUN GETS HIGH,THOSE FISH WILL TUCKSO TIGHT TO THAT COVER,WHETHER IT’S VEGETATION,WHETHER IT’S A DOCK,WHETHER IT’S A SHARPBREAKING CONTOUR. BUT THESE FISH WILL REALLY STARTTO RELATE TO SHADEAS THAT SUN GETS HIGH. SO THAT KIND OF DICTATESSOME OF YOUR STRATEGY. >> THERE HE IS. >> THERE YOU GO. GOOD ONE. HERE HE COMES. THAT’S WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR. >> YEAH. >> GOOD SHOW. >> COME ON UP HERE. THAT WATER IS SO CLEAR. SO WITH THE SHARPEST,SHARPER BREAKS. . . >> SEEMS WHERE IT’S AT,ISN’T IT?GOOD JOB. >> THAT IS A DANDY FISH. YOU KNOW, THE BOAT’SIN 20 FEET OF WATER. YOU CAN SEE HOW CLOSE WE ARETO THE WEEDLINE. JUST LIKE A WALL. THESE FISH ARE JUST LAYINGIN THOSE SHADY SPOTS. GREAT FISH. >> GOOD JOB. >> GOT A PATH ON THAT ONE,BUT YOU KNOW,NOT ALL THESE SPOTS ARE EQUALALONG THIS BAR THAT’S COMINGOUT HERE. SEEMS LIKE THE KEY SPOTS AREWHERE THESE WEEDS COME OUT,AND THEN THERE’S JUSTA SHARP BREAK. AND IF YOU CAN GET ANY TYPEOF VEGETATION, ANY TYPEOF CABBAGE OR COONTAILOR ANYTHING ON THAT,ANY TYPE OF A TALL WEEDON THAT SHARP BREAKWHERE THAT SHADE IS,THAT’S WHERE THE FISHARE HOLDING. YOU KNOW, THERE ARE JUSTSWEET SPOTS ALONG HERE,FOR SURE. >> WELL, THAT’S WORKING GOOD,JASE. THEY’RE RIGHT ALONG THE EDGEOF THAT THING AND THEY SURE WANTTHAT WACKY WORMWITH THAT SLOW DELIVERY. THEY’RE RIGHT ON THAT BREAK. >> THIS IS A TYPICAL PATTERN,MIDDLE OF THE DAY. GOT A HIGH SKY,IT’S VERY HOT AND WE DON’T EVENHAVE A RIPPLE ON THE WATER. THESE BASS MOVE OUTFROM THE SHALLOWSAND THEN THEY MOVEINTO THE DEEPER AREA. LOW LIGHT PERIODSEARLY IN THE MORNINGAND LATE IN THE EVENINGIS GONNA BE THE BEST TIME. IN YOUR PRESENTATIONS,WE’LL HAVE TO CHANGE ACCORDINGLYBECAUSE WE’LL HAVE TO FISHTHE OUTSIDE BREAK,IT SEEMS LIKE,DURING THE MIDDLE OF THE DAY. THERE WE GO!>> ALL RIGHT. >> THERE’S A BETTER ONE, YEAH. HERE SHE COMES. >> WHOA!THAT IS COOL. THAT’S WHY WE’RE HERE. >> NICE FISH, NICE FISH. THAT IS A BEAUTY THERE. >> WHAT WE’VE BEEN LOOKING FORFOR A WHILE. >> THAT WAS A DANDY. THAT WAS A HEALTHY LOOKINGSPOT TOO. >> YEAH, PERFECT. >> LITTLE BIT OF A POINTTHAT COMES OUT HERE. >> THAT’S WHAT WE HADRIGHT HERE. NICE FISH. >> BEAUTIFUL. >> HOW DEEP WILL YOU FIND BASSOUT HERE, AL?>> WE’LL FIND BASS THAT’LL GOINTO THE 20 FOOT CATEGORY. BUT MOST OF THE BASSTHAT ARE CATCHABLETHAT WE SEEM TO GETARE RIGHT AROUND THAT 15, 18WHEN THEY’RE OFF THE EDGE OF ITIF THEY’VE GOT A WEEDBED. >> A LOT OF THESE SMALL LAKESTHAT ARE IN THIS AREA,THEY’RE LIKE A LOT OF LAKESIN NORTHERN MINNESOTAWHERE YOU’VE GOT THIS EXCELLENTWATER VISIBILITY. YOU CAN SEE DOWN A LONG WAYSAND THAT ENCOURAGESREALLY GOOD WEED GROWTH. AND SO TYPICALLY THERE’SNO SECRET WHERE YOU’RE GONNAFIND THESE LARGEMOUTH BASS. YOU JUST FISH THE WEEDS AND FISHTHAT AQUATIC VEGETATION. THERE’S NO SHORTAGE OF IT. A LOT OF TIMES WHAT WE’RE GONNADO IS WE’RE GONNA LOOKFOR THESE LARGEMOUTH BASS,THEY’RE POSITIONINGON THESE SHARP BREAKINGSHADY WEEDLINES. AND SO IT MIGHT BE MILFOIL,IT MIGHT BE COONTAIL. THERE’S A LOT OF WEEDSTHAT YOU’RE GONNA FIND. BUT JUST THAT SHARP BREAKTHAT FORMS A WALL THAT CASTSTHAT DEEP SHADOW. YOU COMBINE THAT SHADOWWITH THAT VEGETATIONAND YOU’RE GONNA HAVELARGEMOUTHSIN ALMOST ALL THESE LAKES. THE PATTERN IS SO SIMPLEAND IT’S SO EFFECTIVE,YOU’RE GONNA COME OUT HEREAND CATCH A LOT OF FISH. THERE HE IS!>> THAT LOOKS GOOD, JASE. >> YEAH, HE’S DOWN IN THE WEEDS. GET HIM UP OUT OF THERE. >> AH, HE BURIED HIMSELF. >> YEAH, HE GOT ME UPIN THE WEEDS. TRY TO GET UP ON THIS FISH HERE. >> NICE FISH, JASE. THAT’LL DO. >> I THINK THERE’S A LOT OF. . . >> HE REALLY WENT DOWNINTO THAT WEEDS. >> HERE HE COMES. >> I’VE GOT A 20 POUNDFLUOROCARBON LEADER ON THIS,BUT YOU CAN JUST SLICERIGHT THROUGH THAT HEAVY STUFF. AND IT’S PRETTY PIKE PROOF TOO,WHICH IS PRETTY NICE. THESE NORTHERN MINNESOTA LAKES. >> YEAH, WE KIND OF ARRIVEDTO THIS CONCLUSION HERE. WE STARTED OUT THROWING UPA LITTLE SHALLOW FURTHER INWORKING SOME OF THE LILY PADS,SOME OF THE SHALLOWERBEAVER DAMS, YOU KNOW,SOME OF THE SHALLOWER STRUCTURE. WE WORKED OUR WAY OUTTO THE WEEDS FLATS. THERE’S SOME GREAT WEEDBEDSOUT HERE. AND WE WERE FINDING THESE FISHON THE SHARP BREAK ANYWHEREFROM 9 TO MAYBE 14 FEETOF WATER. AND IT’S KIND OF THE THIRDOPTION THAT WE TRIED TODAY. WHAT WE’RE DOINGIS USING BRAIDED. IT’S ALMOST A KIND OFFINESSE PRESENTATION TO WHEREYOU’RE JUST CASTING THIS,USING 10 TO 14 POUND BRAIDOF THAT HEAVY 20 POUNDFLUOROCARBON LEADER. JUST USE A SPOT-STALKER JIGAND JUST SEETHAT WIRE WEED GUARD. IT’S GETTING KIND OF BEAT UPHERE. WE CAUGHT A FEW FISHON IT TODAY. AND THAT’S JUST A KALIN’SWAC-O-WORM. YOU KIND OF SEEON THE COLLAR HERE,I’VE BEEN GOING EITHERFAR FORWARD OR IN THE MIDDLEJUST SO THAT I WANT THAT WORMTO JUST TEETER-TOTTERAS IT FALLS TO THE WATERON THAT SHARP BREAK ANYWHEREFROM 10 TO 14 FEET OF WATER. IT’S A LITTLE BIT OFAN OFF-BITE. BLUE SKIES. IT WAS WINDY AND CLOUDYAND RAINY THE LASTCOUPLE OF DAYSAND NOW WE’VE GOTTHIS BLUEBIRD DAY TODAY. SO THESE FISH ARE OFFA LITTLE BIT. BUT SO OFTEN A PRESENTATIONLIKE THIS IS JUST TOO MUCHFOR THESE FISH TO RESIST. >> PERFECT SHADE. HE’S AFTER IT. THERE, I GOT HIM. >> BOY, HE SUCKED THAT IN, TOO. OH. >> FISH WAS RIGHT UPIN THE SHADE. >> YEAH, HE WAS RIGHT THEREON TOP. >> WE’VE SEEN OVER THE LAST 10,20 YEARS, THE POPULARITYOF THESE LARGEMOUTH BASSFISHERIES HAS JUST TAKEN OFF. BASS FISHERIES,IN A LOT OF CASES,ARE JUST TREMENDOUSIN A LOT OF THESE LAKES. AND IF YOU JUST WANT TO GETYOUR FIX AND GET A BENT ROD,LARGEMOUTH BASS ARE A GREAT WAYTO DO IT. HERE HE IS, WHOA. >> WHOA, THERE WE GO. >> THAT WAS A COOL BITE. THAT FISH JUST DRILLED ITRIGHT ALONG THE BREAK THERE. >> YEAH, GOOD. >> HERE HE COMES. >> NICE FISH. >> YEAH. ALL RIGHT, COME ON OVER HERE. >> THERE. THAT IS A RESPECTABLE FISH. >> YEAH, THAT’S A GOOD ONE,JASE. >> THAT FISH WAS LIVINGRIGHT WHERE IT SHOULD BE. THAT WAC-O-WORM JUSTFREE-FALLED DOWN THAT WEEDLINEABOUT TWO SECONDS. >> THAT’S A NICE FISH, JASE.
