A lot of athletes fancy themselves musicians. But only baseball boasts a growing number of dedicated tribute acts — including an all-star grindcore outfit and a pop-punk band named after Dancing Homer’s favourite team.

We are living in an era of unparalleled musical baseball gifts. Basketball might get the courtside star power and football is football weirdly inclined, you could listen only to music about that sport.

The Isotopes are a Canadian punk band whose songs explicitly detail such crucial minutia as the infield fly rule and the loneliness of players defecting from Cuba. Important lessons for the kids, you know?

Columbus has Slugging Percentage, a two-piece who started a show with one of their mom’s performing the national anthem on the flute and who encourage fans to mosh in a circle around them along the base path the bring to every show. And they have an umpire.

Which brings us to my personal favourite, the Pig Destroyer-referencing tribute to the Los Angeles Dodgers breakout star, Yasiel Puig — Puig Destroyer.

Featuring members of Thrice and Curlupanddie, Puig Destroyer celebrate baseball fights and ask that you “Stop Fucking Bunting” over 220 BPM blast beats. And they made it on to ESPN! So legit!

But you don’t have to stop with bands that are named after baseball players. You can listen to baseball players who are themselves named after baseball players sing about being baseball players, because they are those baseball players.

Neon Deion Sanders released a single album — Prime Time — in 1994. “Must Be The Money” never actually charted, and the album never charted, and even though he was managed by MC Hammer, Prime Time’s music career flatlined quickly. The opposite of Bernie Williams, who’s followed a four-time World Series winning career with the Yankees
with two albums of jazz guitar and a Latin Grammy nomination.

Former Red Sox pitcher Bronson Arroyo released an album of covers called COVERING THE BASES following the team’s 2004 World Series run which included the Fenway victory anthem, Dirty Water — as aided by Johnny Damon, Kevin Millar, and Kevin Youkilis. Damon and Arroyo also contributed to the Dropkick Murphys cover of the OTHER Red Sox victory song, Tessie. Whole lot of victory songs.

And if you prefer your baseball songs a little creamier, Mike Stud used to be Duke’s closer before Tommy John surgery sidelined his career. Now he raps and croons about relief pitching and girls.

All of this is ignoring the non-baseball themed music of guys like Jose Reyes, Scott Radinsky, and Omar Visquel. Okay, we won’t ignore Omar Visquel. This is him covering the Goo Goo Dolls.

Got a favourite baseball band or song or whatever? Let us know in the comments. Subscribe for more This Exists every week, and listen to Puig Destoryer — stop fucking bunting.

Sports Betting Systems – Increase Your Odds

No matter what type of gambling you like to engage in, common sense says that developing a system will increase your odds of gaining a return on your wager. This theory holds true for most people interested in sports betting; sticking to a certain set of practices will in the end help you realize gains over the long term, rather than losses.

Before we start talking about some sports betting systems, it is important to note that this logic is only partially true. In fact, a betting system can at best help you to reduce your losses over the long term while gambling on sports; the best possible realistic exit for any system is an even split of wins and losses over the long haul.

The reason for this brings down to the professionals, by which we mean the professionals who really DO make a huge profit month in and month out, through history, in sports betting. Those professionals, of course, are the bookmakers.

Using statistical analysis, bookmakers can always determine which betting systems are currently being used by bettors, and they always adjust the odds accordingly. They may make a home game split a poor value bet in order to compensate, or begin to adjust the lines. Whatever the measures, you can bet that the sports books have thought up ways to counter systems.

With that said, there are systems that can be used to increase your chances of profit over the long term in sports betting, but they greatly have to do with personal control and strategies when betting. The good thing about this approach is that you can use it on any given sport, so it applies universally. Let's take a look at some money wise ways to approach your sports betting strategy.

o Establish a bankroll: Before the beginning of the season, the playoffs, or whatever event you wish to wager on, you have to establish a bankroll. This bankroll will be based on the money you feel you can LOSE during the course of the betting season. Once you lose that money, it is very important that you stop betting or you will find yourself in a lot of trouble, very quickly.

o Do not chase bad bets. One of the biggest temptations for those engaging in sports betting is to try to make up money they lost while wagering on certain games. This is almost always a recipe for disaster. If you lose all your games on betting on weekend NFL games, do not try to make up for it with a bet on Monday night!

Those are the important foundations for any sports betting strategy, and they will help mitigate your losses on any losing season.

Now, let's take a look at some strategies to apply to your general sports betting endeavors.

o Research! In order to make a good bet (meaning, a bet that has the best chance of winning), you need to know all you can about the game in question. That means doing a lot of research. Know who is playing what position, their health and mental status, the record of the teams against each other, other records, even who the officials are. Good research is your most effective tool when it comes to placing a good bet.

o Watch out for tired teams! In a lot of sports, teams play back to back games. If they are playing a fresh team, this can factor into their ability to play. It does not always work, but most times a team playing its second game in two nights will have a reduced chance of winning.

o Betting series: This strategy really only applies to baseball betting, where teams may play three or more games against each other in a row. In these cases it is usually possible to predict which team will come out with the most wins in the series, and that's an easier call than game to game.

Of course, for all those strategies, you have to keep in mind that the bookmakers are just as aware of the factors as you are. They will adjust the odds accordingly, which is something else you have to be aware of.

University of Maryland (UM) Terrapins (Terps) Football Players Taken in 2010 NFL Draft – 2 Selected

The University of Maryland (UM) Terrapins (Terps) college football program had two players taken in the 2010 NFL Draft that was held in April. The school based in College Park, Maryland had two athletes selected by National Football League (NFL) franchises in the annual draft and those two men are:

  • Bruce Campbell (offensive lineman) – selected in the fourth round with the 106th overall pick by the Oakland Raiders
  • Nolan Carroll (cornerback) – picked in the fifth round by the Miami Dolphins as the 145th overall player selected

The Maryland Terrapins compete in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) and are proud to send disciplined young men on to play football at the next level. For athletes like Bruce and Nolan hearing their names called during the NFL Draft is a dream come true and the University of Maryland prides itself in playing a role in turning those dreams into reality.

Bruce Campbell, born in 1988, is a 6’6″ 314 pound offensive lineman that played tackle in high school and college but is expected to at least start out as an interior offensive lineman at the guard position with the Oakland Raiders. Despite having the height to play offensive tackle the initial reports from the Raiders are that they would prefer to ease Bruce into their offense at a position that lends itself to a smoother transition.

Campbell is slated to wear number 74 next year for the NFL team in Oakland and Raiders head coach Tom Cable is excited about the upside of his fourth round draft selection. Coach Cable hopes to get Bruce on the field early and often as the Raiders for years now have been trying to fill a void on their offensive line. Many football analysts agree that the root cause of the recent offensive woes of the Oakland franchise can be traced back to a porous front five.

It can be argued that Nolan Carroll, the other University of Maryland 2010 NFL Draft selection, is in many ways an opposite type of player from his former teammate Bruce Campbell. Carroll plays defense whereas Campbell plays offense and furthermore while Bruce has a large 6’6″ 314 pound frame Nolan is a much more pedestrian size at 5’11” and 204 pounds.

Before being picked up by the Miami Dolphins to add youth and speed to their secondary Nolan grew up in the state of Florida. Nolan Carroll was born and raised in Green Cove Springs, Florida which is in the northeastern part of the state. After spending five years in Maryland during his stint in college Nolan and his parents (who still live in Florida) are surely excited about having him back in the Sunshine State.
