Sidney Crosby – 10 Years From Now

One thing that is scary when you think about how Sidney Crosbys career will look like, is how good it already looks! I mean Sidney Crosby has already beaten Mario Lemieux when it comes to points in their rookie year in NHL. And Mario Lemieux put up some amazing numbers that only Wayne Gretzky has been able to surpass. So now when you look at Sidney Crosby, you really have to take that into consideration when you compare Sid the Kid to Gretzky or Lemieux.

Will Sidney Crosby reach 200 points in one season? That is something that only Wayne Gretzky done in the history of the NHL, he did it four times in the 80’s. I personally think that as good as Sidney is playing right now, nothing is impossible especially now that it’s a bit easier to score since the NHL rules changed last year.(2005-2006 season)

When you look at Gretzkys first couple of seasons he had 137 points in his first year, 164 in his second year and 212 points in his third. That truly is very hard for Sidney to beat, but keep in mind that Gretzky played in an era that scores like 6-8, 6-6, 7-4 were not unusual. Looking at the league now it has changed, now games usually ends in scores like 2-4, 3-2, 1-3, so what does all this have to do with the question regarding if Sidney Crosby can beat Gretzkys remarkable season statistics? Well it simply explains how tougher it is today to get points, which means Sidney Crosby will have a much tougher time reaching the 200 point plateau. Still what makes me think that he can do it, is his amazing first year in the NHL, getting 102 points in today’s NHL is simply phenomenal, and then to think that he did it in one of the worst teams in the NHL. Also now that Evengi Malkin has joined the Pittsburgh Penguins, it really helps Sidney put up more points.

My guess is that Sidney will reach 200points one time in his career -if Evengi Malkin stays playing with Crosby for many years ahead. What do you think, will Sidney do it?

Biltmore Estate Embraces Pooches Past and Present

Recently I grabbed my dog Buck to search out the truth when it came to the dog-friendliness of the Biltmore Estate. We knew dogs were welcomed on the grounds. So we assumed that we’d be walking some trails, cruising some gardens and home we’d come. AU CONTRAIRE…We were allowed all over the place and a good time was had by all.

I always park at the Arboretum and then hike up the stairs to the estate. I just love this garden area that leads to my favorite vantage point where I view our beloved blue hills. It is right above the wisteria that leads to the house. Dogs are not allowed inside the house itself much to the chagrin of my pooch. He reminded me that since the Biltmore had been the home to St. Bernards, Russian Wolfhounds and Sheepdogs he was certain the pets past wouldn’t mind. He eventually understood that we all must do our part to preserve such an heirloom. And risky it would be to allow pets within the walls of the famed home.

While frolicking on the front lawn we met up with some traveling pooches, one delightful cocker and two mini dachshunds. With a bit of a scramble and entanglement of leashes the introductions were made and the consensus from the dogs was that they were having a marvelous day. So, we trotted on. After a wonderful romp around the grounds and a stop off at the Bass pond we then jumped in the car and headed for Cedric’s, the pub in Antler Village named after Vanderbilt’s infamous pooch. We were looking forward to lunch at the Biltmore’s dog-friendly restaurant and so it came to be, of course al fresco. The staff was delightful and treated Buck with genuine Biltmore hospitality.

We were eager to find out all we could about Cedric. It seems George Vanderbilt’s trusted Saint Bernard was the first pet at the Biltmore. No one is sure how George came to own Cedric, but they do know that he brought him to Biltmore from Pointe d’Acadie, his summer home in Bar Harbor, Maine, sometime around the opening of Biltmore House in 1895. They went on to state the obvious and that life was good for a pet of the Vanderbilt’s. Cedric not only had free reign of at least the first floor of Biltmore House, which he often spent lounging in the Library or Billiard Room or sunning himself on the Loggia, but he also frequently accompanied his master and other family members on excursions throughout their vast estate.

With our bellies full we headed to Biltmore Farm which was just a hop, skip and a jump. The staff attendant could not have been nicer encouraging us to take funny pictures of our beloved Buckaroo using an old wagon and straw hats as props. We finished off our day with a stroll (trying to work off our yummy fish and chips) around the bike path with a view of the Swannanoa River.

If you choose to take in the house on the same day as your visit of the grounds note there are a few kennels. You must ask the gate keepers upon entering and you will be directed to them. You are the master of the lock and key if you are lucky enough to obtain an empty kennel. Pets must be leashed at all times for safety and comfort for all guests. Dogs are not allowed in the main house but we were welcomed in several of the other buildings. Of course we asked permission and were on our best behavior.

The Biltmore is a site you must see and it is truly more fun with your pooch in tow.

Why Is Time So Elusive?

What is the one ‘thing’ that cannot be saved, shared, bought or sold, seen or heard. It cannot be captured, controlled, bargained for, or stopped. It’s not even a thing, it has no fundamental size, shape, physical quality.

It’s a thing, a thing that we can measure, talk about, regret about losing, and complain about not having enough of, but really, what is it? Shapeless, colorless, weightless, it doesn’t smell or look bad. Is it a concept? A construct developed by humans to put limits on our individual experiences on earth?

The one thing that is limited, and unlimited at the same time (no pun). The great equalizer among men is time. A commodity that each of us have but no one knows how much.

We know when our time began, but never when it will end naturally.

Our time on the planet is unknown.

We seek more of it. Even though it is free it is also priceless, we squander it on mindless games or TV shows or just being lazy, or worse, just wasting time.

Wait. Our incremental time slots, can be bought and sold, if you have a job, you are selling your time for money, that just means you are sharing your time with those other then with whom you would prefer to spend your time.

We attempt to control time by planning our time. It cannot be stopped. Even if we die, time goes on and on.

An interesting thing: time.

We all want more of it, which is impossible. We have a limited amount. That, we cannot change.

We talk about it as if we could control it. “How will I spend my time?”

Wisely I hope? Time waits on no man. We are all on time schedules in an attempt to control this limited resource. We say “Don’t waste my time.” But we cannot own it.

It’s value is beyond reproach. No way to get more.

It is far more valuable than money. We must spend it to live; buy groceries, housing, and recreation.

It seems like the older I get the quicker time goes by, there have been times when I was attending a (boring) meeting that time seemed to stand still, at the same meeting, someone would say ” Is it that time already? That time just flew by!” Shocking how the same time frame can give two different perceptions. That makes the perception of time on an individual basis variable. So we each perceive time differently.

When I look back, time seems to have gone so quickly, however when I look forward, it appears to go so much slower, even crawling at times.

Time perception is especially interesting while waiting. Some people are great waiters; they pull out their iPad or their phone, and get busy waiting. It’s what we do after all.

So how can we manage what we cannot control?

Every time we notice that we are carelessly using our most valuable resource, think about this article and rethink your actions. Can you use your time more wisely?

What would you do if you knew how much time you had?

What would you do differently?

How would you spend your time?

Would you use it wisely? Or would you wish it away?

Twisting Golf Bags – Tips to Keep Your Golf Cart Bag From Twisting

Does your golf bag twist on your walking golf cart? Does that interfere with your game or make it less enjoyable? If so, this article can give you a few tips to help keep your bag from twisting.

Golf bag twisting occurs on some walking golf carts, as some bag manufacturers advertise non-twisting features on their bags.

If you use a walking golf cart, you may find that your golf bag occasionally twists. And if you’re like me, you find that to be aggravating. What to do? Solutions to this problem fall into two general categories (1) store-bought or (2) homemade.

1. Store-bought solutions:

Some golf bag manufacturers advertise non–twisting features on their bags. The manufactured non-twist solutions fall into the following general categories:

  • Anti-twist sleeves: The cart strap is threaded through the bag’s anti-twist sleeve
  • Anti-twist strap: A strap on the bag fastens to the cart frame.
  • Non-slip materials applied to the bag bottom
  • The shape of the bag’s bottom

There is also a hint in manufacturer’s ads that the weight of the bag or the distribution of club weight can be causes of bag twisting.

2. Homemade solutions:

Before you begin shopping for replacement bag, we recommend that first you try the below-listed ideas. All are inexpensive. We recommend they be tried in the sequence listed.

  1. Check the weight distribution of your clubs to see if the distribution can be better balanced without sacrificing convenient access to your clubs.
  2. Check your bag to see if a cart strap or straps can conveniently be threaded through some bag strap or opening.
  3. Obtain a bungee cord, fasten it around some part of the frame (bottom is probably better) and pull it tight. This could possibly add just enough force to keep the bag from twisting.
  4. Alternately, with the bungee cord look for a strap or hole through which it could be threaded. Sort of a make-shift anti-twist bag sleeve. (On my bag there is an unused bottom umbrella hole that would probably work nicely.)
  5. Reverse solution #4 so that the bungee cord is fastened to the bag and then threaded through some portion of the cart frame.
  6. Find some non-slip material (such as that used in kitchen cabinets) and glue it to the bottom of your bag.
  7. You might also be able to apply the same non-slip material to the cart itself either on the bottom rest or inside the upper strap.
  8. If all of these solutions fail, you might look into buying a lighter bag with a manufacturer’s no-twist” feature.

One of these solutions should work for your situation. I hope you have found these tips helpful in making your golf experience more enjoyable.

After Blocking Three Trades, Phillips Must Yield To Cincinnati’s Second Base Prospect

Throughout the winter off season, the team with the worst record in the league last year did almost nothing to improve, beyond hoping that its young players get enough experience to improve enough to compete by 2019. The few moves the Reds did make all focused on the bullpen, which finished with the third highest earned run average in all of baseball in 2016.

What the Cincinnati front office has not addressed, even though there is an easy solution, is the other position in which it ranked twenty-eighth out of the thirty teams comprising both leagues. That weakness is second base, currently manned by the most popular player among the Cincinnati fans.

Brandon Phillips was among the elite second basemen at the beginning of the decade, when the Reds reached the postseason four times in five years. His fortunes, much like those of the Reds, have fallen drastically since then.

The former All-Star and Gold Glover rated just above two others at his position, according to baseball-reference.com. With a Wins Above Average (WAA) of -1.6, the Cincinnati second baseman beat out only those in Oakland and Atlanta.

Second basemen across the Major Leagues averaged 15 home runs in 2016, but Phillips hit only eleven. He was also below the big league average at his position in runs batted in, runs scored, and on base percentage.

That last stat really hurt his value, and thus the success of the Reds. He finished near the bottom in bases on balls, finishing ahead of just Atlanta, Oakland, and the New York Yankees.

To their credit, those in the front office of the Reds did try on several occasions to trade Phillips, only to have the second base veteran refuse to waive his no-trade privileges. Last winter Cincinnati worked out a deal with Washington which would have reunited Phillips with his long time manager Dusty Baker and put him on a contending team. Phillips negated the transaction, as he did later that winter a deal that would have sent him to Arizona. This past off season Phillips, who was raised near Atlanta, refused to accept a trade that would have landed him on his hometown Braves.

If Cincinnati truly wants its dwindling fan base to buy into its rebuild, club officials must give Phillips’s playing time to one of its youngsters. Dilson Herrera is the obvious heir apparent to Phillips, and his tenure needs to begin now.

Herrera has tremendous power, which seems to be the trend for second basemen in today’s game. While Phillips managed to hit fewer than fifteen, the average for his position, Herrera is projected to smash 24 per season.

At 23 years old, Herrera does not need to log another full year in the minors. Any growing pains need to be experienced now, when the Reds are not expected to compete for the division title. If the club waits until 2018, the rebuild lingers into another year.

Herrera has already tasted the Majors when he was with the Mets, who were in the middle of the pennant race during both of his call ups. Surely he could handle the less stressful everyday role in Cincinnati, especially with the chance of reaching his potential right when the Reds return to contending status.

Sure, the Cincinnati fans have loved Brandon Phillips for the decade he has suited up for the Reds. So you know what they would love better? A return to winning. That will not happen by taking away valuable at bats from your top prospect and giving them to a guy who gave you less offensive production than every other second baseman but two in the entire big leagues.
