Fishing for early season pre spawn smallmouth bass on Lake Erie makes for a great time on the water. A good percentage of the fish should still be deep, so targeting them with a drop shot rig will be key to bigger bites.

Boy Scouts fishing pro Tom Redington explains where to look for largemouth bass in the spring and how to catch those shallow spring bass. With big largemouth bass moving shallow to spawn in the spring, Tom shows how to catch bass during warming trends and also where to find bass after cold fronts slow down the bite.

My buddy and I went out to a local lake in search of smallmouth bass! We were hoping that a lot of them would be on the beds already but that wasn’t exactly the case. We went around the entire lake and only found a small handful of bass on beds. This time last year, we slayed the smallmouth by fishing deeper docks and transition areas with crankbaits and a drop shot. That was not the case today.
I did manage to catch a total of 5 smallmouth and my buddy caught 2. The majority of the fish were caught on a jig. The biggest took a crankbait and the second biggest took a drop shot.
Western Washington is FINALLY getting some nice weather so the water is starting to warm up a bit! The surface temp on this particular lake hit 65 at one point. It was 60 in the morning and warmed up to around 64 by late afternoon.

Most of us have easy access to bass water. Lakes, ponds and even rivers hold them. Tie on a top water fly and watch the surface explode, or go deep with a heavily weighted streamer. You’ll have a great time by yourself or with your buddies.
